I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to transmit

to you herewith, to be laid before the Secretary of

State for the Colonies, a copy of a note from the

United States Ambassador stating that it is the desire

of his Government to extend the duties of the United

States Naval Attaché at Peking to the British Posses-

sions in the Far East.

I am to enquire whether Lord Elgin sees any objec-

tion to acceding to this request, and to suggest that,

the proper

in the event of there being no objection,

authorities may be instructed to afford Lieutenant

Commander Gillis such assistance as they properly can

in the discharge of his duties.
